Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. Exodus 14:21,22
The Story
After all the plagues that came upon Egypt, they were glad to see the Israelites go and even showered them with gifts upon their departure. In this, they fulfilled a prophesy given to Abram, long ago [1]. But as the Israelites left, Pharaoh changed his mind about letting them go and pursued them with his armies. When the Israelites arrived at the red sea, they were trapped. In the concluding act of this salvation story, Moses stretched out his staff, and God parted the Red sea for the people to walk across on dry ground.
The Significance
Here we see a people who were slaves and, upon receiving a baptism in the Red Sea, became free. In this same way, we can be spiritually free from sin, signified by the baptism in Christ. [2]
