As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 1 Samuel 17
The Story
There was a Philistine warrior named Goliath that came before the Israelite armies each day to taunt them and their God. He challenged them to send out a warrior to fight him, but none of the Israelites dared face him because he was a giant of a man.
One day, a young Israelite shepherd named David came to the army’s camp to check on his older brothers. When Goliath came out to taunt the Israelites, David spoke boldly and soon found himself before the king volunteering to fight the giant.
Carrying only a sling and a handful of stones, David came before Goliath. Seeing David, Goliath was offended that Israel would send such a young man to fight him, but David boldly declared that the Lord would deliver Goliath into his hands.
David ran toward Goliath on the battlefield and slung a stone with deadly precision. The stone embedded into his forehead and Goliath fell to the ground.
David took Goliath’s sword, cut off his head, and the Philistine armies fled in terror. [1]
The Significance
David defeating Goliath is a story of someone standing up for God, trusting in the Holy Spirit, stepping out in faith, and winning the victory through God’s strength. This is the kind of person that we should aspire to be.
David gave us a great example of what it means to be like Christ. The Israelites needed a savior, and David stepped out and became that for them, not in his strength, but by the power of God.
